Representation
Representation in Our Film
In today's vlog, I'll be going over an important topic: Representation. Our film mainly focuses on a character who gives a "happy, carefree girl" aesthetic -someone who's full of excitement & life-. However, as the story continues to unfold, this same cheerful happy person is contrasted with the darker reality of her fate, as she is later killed by her own date. Moreover, the character fits more into a common cliche seen in many horror and thriller movies, where the happy innocent character meets a tragic end. While this isn't an unfair portrayal, it does indeed go with the well-known stereotype seen in the media.
In our film, we can challenge representation by giving the character more depth, instead of simply following the "helpless victim" stereotype. This means showing more of her personality, lifestyle, and routine. This may include adding moments that show her beyond just being happy or adding moments where she foreshadows something's off throughout her routine. This could make her more than just a one-dimensional character and allow for a more dynamic portrayal.
Furthermore, I think we could make edits to improve our characters. If we were to improve the character's representation we would consider adding to her personality. So she's portrayed as a real person rather than a "happy girl who gets killed". We could also try to make her more active in the story, possibly giving her a moment where she knows something is off, as I mentioned before. Lastly, adjusted the film to make her demise less predictable and add more of an unexpected twist.
